A1 - Breakthrough Stage

This stage is appropriate for the Beginner student who is a “Basic User" of Italian.

This level is designed for those who are brand new to italian, studying the language formally for the first time, and/or for those who would like to strengthen whatever limited exposure to the language they have had in the past.  Their vocabulary and understanding of the language is restricted to perhaps a few key words and expressions, and they do not really have an idea about the grammar or how to use it in context.

Upon completing the ‘Breakthrough' stage, a typical student should be able to...

1. understand and use familiar everyday expressions

2. use very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type

3. introduce him/herself

4. ask and answer questions about personal details such as…

               - where he/she lives

               - people he/she knows

               - things he/she has

5. interact in a simple way provided the other person speaks slowly, clearly, and is prepared to help
